Despite its remote location, the town of Vardø has been of great significance for centuries owing to its strategic location as a base for defending Finnmark. As a consequence, there has been a church here since the early fourteenth century. Vardø Church is sited on the east coast of the island. The present building is the fourth to stand on the site, and was built in the nineteen fifties. It serves a Lutheran congregation.
