Thyholmen is the old district of Arendal and is a must for any visitor interested in historic buildings. In 1992, the European Nostra award was given in recognistion of the preservation and restoration of the houses in this area. The buildings date from the seventeenth to late nineteenth centuries. The streets of Pollen and Rådhusgaten include some of the finer old houses, which include the Town Hall. A collection of smaller houses lines Øvre Tyholmen.
