Trondheim Public Library lies in the heart of the historic city, at Peter Egges plass. In a country which values literacy and literature highly, libraries are taken seriously. The library service was established in 1902, and from 1988 the main facility has been housed in the former Town Hall, a beautifully restored building from 1712. Visitors are also brought to this site by the ruins of a medieval church. The library receives more than a million visitors annually, offers free wireless internet access, and hosts classical music concerts and other cultural events.
