Tønsberg Maritime Museum lies near the centre of the historic town. An important medieval town with strong royal connections, Tønsberg also became a centre for whaling and merchant shipping. The Maritime Museum deals extensively with the history of the local whaling industry including the biography of pioneer Svend Foyn. There are many model ships here. The displays include more than four hundred pictures of the merchant shipping fleet. It also hosts temporary exhibitions.
