The National Monument called The Swords in the Rock lies near to the centre of Stavanger. It marks the site where Harald Hårfagre fought the battle, in 872, that united Norway as one kingdom. The monument was unveiled in 1982 by King Olav. It depicts three enormous swords. These are closely modelled on Viking swords discovered as a result of archaeological excavations. The monumental sculpture was created by artist Friz Røed.
