St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church is the centre of Catholic worship in Bergen and the surrounding region. Catholicism was forbidden in Norway from the Reformation until the mid nineteenth century, and a congregation was founded here almost immediately upon its toleration being pronounced. The present church was begun in 1864 and was constructed to plans drawn up by Italian architect Mella. The congregation has expanded rapidly, not least owing to immigration and the lively congregation counts around three thousand members.
