St. Olav’s Church lies about ten minutes drive from Haugesund city centre. The church was built by King Håkon Håkonson in 1250. The royal church is the most important tangible sign that Avaldsnes is the oldest royal estate in Norway, established by King Harald Fairhair in the ninth century. An obelisk known as the "Virgin Mary’s needle" stands by the church, which legend says will precipitate the Apocalypse if it touches the main building. Guided tours are available.
