Skjerstad Church lies in a rural location about twenty miles to the east of Bodø. It stands on a hill which gives fine views of the area. There has been a church on this site, acting as a landmark and potent religious symbol, for perhaps one thousand years. Although built at the end of the 1950s, the present church, designed by Arnstein Arneberg, closely immitates the style of medieval churches. The churchyard contains gravestones from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, some of the oldest in the whole of Norway.
