Siljan Church lies to the northwest of Skien, in the Telemark countryside. Like many churches in the region, it is built of stone and is medieval in origin. It is believed to have been founded in the middle of the twelfth century. The church was dedicated in Catholic times to St Michael the Archangel. The church underwent a major restoration when frescoes were discovered under a layer of whitewash. There are many ancient burial sites in the area.
