Selje Monastery lies on the island of Selja, a fifteen minute boat journey from the town of Selje. The monastery was built in the twelfth century by monks of the Benedictine order and dedicated to Saint Sunniva, said to have been the daughter of an Irish king and patroness of Western Norway. On the island you can see what is left of the monastery, parts of which are still today used for masses and weddings, and the remains of the old monastery church dedicated to St. Alban. There are also several Viking graves and the remains of an Iron Age longhouse on the island. A guided tour of the monastery is included as part of the return boat trip.
