The Sailor’s Monument is a familiar and dramatic landmark and meeting place that lies in the heart of Bergen, in the central square of Torgallmenningen. The monument is the work of Dyre Vaa and was unveiled in 1950. The piece is more than seven metres high and contains a number of interesting reliefs in bronze as well as twelve statues which surround it. The theme of the work is the contribution of Norway to seafaring from Viking times to the modern day.
