The World War II Cemetery for Russian prisoners was established on the island of Tjøtta in 1953. Previously, Russian servicemen had been buried in ordinary cemeteries. The large burial ground lies just off the main Rv17 highway. There are almost seven thousand military personnel buried here, 826 in individually marked graves. There is also an international cemetery here, containing the remains of almost 3000 prisoners who perished on the troop ship Rigel, most of whom were Russian prisoners.
