Here, in the heart of Tønsberg, the ruins of Scandinavia’s largest round church were discovered. Tønsberg is the oldest recorded town in Norway, and was a centre of great wealth and importance during the medieval period. Consequently, it was home to several great religious houses and impressive churches. Excavations here in the nineteen eighties and nineties revealed remains of a significant monastery here, along with Viking graves. Many discoveries form part of the standing exhibition in the local library.
