The Royal Residence is one of the largest wooden buildings found in the Nordic world. It was completed in the late eighteeenth century and contains one hundred and forty rooms. The enormous palace was first commissioned by the widow of a wealthy privy councillor, before passing into use by the royal family. It is in baroque style and contains much fine interior decoration. Visitors may join a guided tour except when the Royal Family is in residence.
