The Royal Palace lies at the top of Karl Johans gate, in a prominent location overlooking much of the city. It was begun in 1824 and the King officially took up residence in 1849. It is the most important of the Norwegian royal residences, and many important state functions take place here. The guard is changed daily, an event that attracts many spectators. The attractive grounds of the palace are highly unusual in being a public park. They are a great place to enjoy a picnic in summer. Guided tours of the palace interior are conducted during summer.
