The Rjukan Waterfall (Rjukanfossen in Norwegian) is one of the original tourist attractions in Norway. First brought to widespread attention in the early nineteenth century by geologist Jens Esmark, the waterfall, which drops more than one hundred metres, was soon attracting visitors from all over Europe. It has inspired artists such as C. Dahl and Johannes Flintoe. Much of the power of the waterfall has been harnessed to hydroelectric power, but it remains an awe-inspiring sight.
