The Rjukan Railway is classified by the Norwegian Office of Historical Monuments as of national interest. It was opened in 1909 and lies at the heart of the industrial complex opened here by Norsk Hydro, now the largest industrial concern in the country. The railway offers spectacular views in this fabulous tourist area. It still runs a steam railway ferry, the sister ship of which was sunk by the Telemark heavy water saboteurs.
