The War Museum in Narvik is owned by the Norwegian Red Cross. It was founded in 1964, moving to its current premises in the centre of town in 1996. During 1940 fierce land and sea battles raged here owing to the vital iron ore supplies controlled by the port. The story of these battles is told through the extensive collection of artefacts held here. The museum also informs the visitor about the history of the German occupation of the town, which lasted a further five years.
