Olav’s Cross stands on Skulegata, in the centre of Voss, near to the cathedral. The cross is set on a mound near the present day post office. It dates from 1023, when King Olav Haraldson arrived to convert the population to Christianity. This cross was erected as the first symbol of Christian worship. It was placed opposite a pagan temple, and symbolised the conquest of the new religion. The temple was pulled down and replaced by a wooden church, and, two hundred years later, by the stone Vangskyrkja you can see today.
