The Ofoten Museum lies to the south of Narvik city centre. It is housed in the hundred year old railway administration building. Its exhibits deal with the social and cultural history of the region. Particular emphasis is placed on the coming of the Ofotbanen railway and the construction of an ice free port at the end of the nineteenth century. These developments, vital to the export of iron ore mined in the region, transformed the nature and fortune of the small city. The museum incorporates an audio visual show. It is set in beautiful surroundings and has both a cafe and a shop.
