The North Norway Art Museum lies in the heart of Tromsø, near to the waterfront and close to the Polar Museum. The building once served as the city post office. The museum was established in 1985 and moved to its current premises in 2001. The collection contains more than fourteen hundred pieces illustrating some of the major movements in Norwegian art from the nineteenth century up to the present day. Notable artists such as J.C. Dahl and Edvard Munch are represented. The museum has a cafeteria and shop.
