The Nordvegen History Centre lies about ten minutes drive (or eight kilometres) from Haugesund. It was opened in 2005 by Queen Sonia. It is a must for Viking History enthusiasts. It is located on the oldest royal estate in Norway, right next to the medieval church of St. Olav. King Harald Fairhair, the ninth century monarch who founded Avaldsnes guides the visitor through the history of the place as a seat of royal power using both evidence gleaned from chronicles and archaeological finds.
