The Nidaros Cathedral is a magnificent building that attracts more than four hundred thousand visitors annually. The first chapel was built here in the eleventh century, and grew over time so that by the thirteenth century it was the largest building in Norway. It has been ravaged by several serious fires, and much of what you see today is the result of a nineteenth century reconstruction designed to capture its medieval glory. Guided tours for groups are possible by prior arrangement. The cathedral is the venue for an extensive programme of concerts and is an active parish church.
