Mære Church lies a few miles to the south of Steinkjer. It is a medieval church that was built on the site of an old pagan temple, symbolising the triumph of Christianity over primitive religion. The church was built on the orders of Norway’s patron saint, St Olav, who demanded that many such heathen sites were transformed. The church, built of stone, dates from the twelfth century.
