The Maihaugen Open Air Museum lies near the centre of Lillehammer, near the central hospital. The museum is a complete recreation of traditional rural society in Norway, comprising around 185 buildings, which contain more than forty thousand significant artefacts. Typical farming activities are demonstrated. Many of the workshops demonstrate traditional crafts. There are a number of exhibitions about aspects of Norwegian history. Special activities and events take place according to the season. Guided tours are available.
