Ålesund Church lies in the heart of the city. It was constructed shortly after the great fire of 1904. The building was designed by Sverre Knudsen and the foundation stone was laid by King Haakon in 1906. It was consecrated in 1909. The frescoes and stained glass windows were the work of Martin Enevold Thømt and Oddvar Straume. The windows behind the organ were a gift from Kaiser Wilhelm II, who aided the reconstruction of the town. Ålesund Church has one of the finest organs in Norway.
