St. George’s Hospital was first opened as a colony for the care and treatment of lepers in medieval times. The present buildings, which include a charming church, were erected at the beginning of the eighteenth century. The hospital was at the forefront of the treatment of the debilitating ailment. It now hosts a museum that houses the Bergen History of Medicine’s collection and informs the visitor about the history of the treatment of the disease.
