The Kaupanger Stave Church lies to the east of Sogndal, on the edge of the village. It is the largest of all the stave churches that remain in Norway and is still in use as the local parish church. The stave churches are great Norwegian treasures, built in medieval times not of stone but of wood. This example dates back to the twelfth century although much of the interior decoration is from the sixteenth.
