Karljohansvern is the old district of Horten, and is the area that has grown up around the naval base which was established in the early nineteenth century. Nowadays it is a quiet district characterised by green spaces, old buildings and several areas of protected natural habitat. There are several museums and galleries here. The banks of the beautiful Horten Canal are popular with walkers and cyclists. The area hosts a number of outdoor events including concerts and an annual sailing race.
