The Ibsen Theatre, dedicated to the world famous playwright who grew up in the town, lies in the heart of Skien. It is based in a wonderful Renaissance-style building opened in 1891. The theatre has a permanent staff of more than twenty employees and mounts more than 250 productions annually. It has a company that tours throughout the Telemark and Vestfold region. Outside the theatre, the company performs Ibsen’s epic verse play "Peer Gynt" in the open air on a bi-annual basis.
