Hovedøya is an island that lies to the south of Oslo, in the middle of Oslo fjord. The island is reached by ferry from the city centre. The journey takes around five minutes. The island has both woodland and grassy areas. It is relatively unspoilt and supports an interesting flora and fauna. There are good beaches here. You will find a restaurant on the island. One of the main attractions on Hovedøya is the ruined monastery, which dates from the twelfth century.
