The Historical Museum in Oslo was established at the end of the nineteenth century and is housed in a grand monumental building. It houses the Antiquities Collection, which contains artefacts found in Norway dating from the Stone Age to the medieval period. The coin collection displays Norwegian coinage over a thousand year period. The ethnographic collection contains the fruits of many decades of Norwegian exploration and includes items from Africa and the Far East. The museum has a shop.
