The extraordinary Helgeland bridge links the large island of Alstahaug with the mainland. The winding bridge is more than one kilometre long and takes a winding route through the sea. As you arrive at the Alstahaug end of the bridge you will see a large sculpture depicting an elk. This was created in 1999 by Skule Waksvik. The elk is the symbol of the municipality and many can be found wandering and foraging freely, even in built up areas.
