Haraldshaugen lies about a mile north of Haugesund town centre. It marks the traditional burial site of King Harald Fairhair. Its importance to the nation was first noted in the famous History of the Kings of Norway by the Icelandic chieftain Snorre. The striking pillar, surrounded by smaller obelisks which represent the old counties of Norway, was erected in 1872. It is the Norwegian national monument.
