Gjesvær lies about thirty kilometres to the north east of Honningsvåg. It is a beautiful little island which has only been connected to the mainland by road since 1976. It has been a trading post and fish landing since the Viking Age. Since the Middle Ages, it has been one of the largest and most prosperous fishing in the area. There are marvellous views from here of Gjesværstappan, an island group that supports vast colonies of seabirds. During the summer bird safaris depart from here.
