Gamlehaugen lies in beautiful countryside a short drive outside Bergen city centre. It is the Bergen residence of His Majesty King Harald. It is set in attractive landscaped grounds which are open to the public. Parts of the building are also open to the public when the King is not in residence. It is built in the style of a Scottish castle and was originally the home of Prime Minister Christian Michelsen, the statesman who led Norway’s independence from Sweden. It was later bought by the Crown.
