The Erling Skjalgson Monument stands close to the "ruined" church of Sola. Erling Skjalgson is the most famous son of Sola. He lived between 975 and 1028. He is widely credited with intoducing Christianity to Norway. This is one of the reasons that the ancient Christian monuments in the area, such as the ancient stone crosses, and the ruined church, attract so much attention from visitors.
