Den Sovende Dronning is one of three towering peaks that cast their shadow over the port city of Narvik. The name means "The Sleeping Queen". It is, in fact, a nickname, possibly coined in reference to Queen Victoria. The mountain resembles a woman’s head in profile, and has a snow capped peak all year round. The summit is more than fourteen hundred metres above sea level. Narvik is in darkness for a couple of months every year, and it above this landmark that locals catch their first glimpse of the sun in Febraury.
