Den Nationale Scene is the main, state subsidised theatre in Bergen, and stands in a central location amid attractive parkland. It was founded by Ole Bull, the great virtuoso violinst, in order to encourage native dramatic talent and boasts Henrik Ibsen as one of its earliest writers in residence. The current building dates from 1909 and is in art nouveau style. The theatre mounts a wide range of plays in a number of genres.
