Damstredet is a charming little street to the north of Oslo city centre, in the St. Hanshaugen area. It is one of the best places to get a feel for Oslo as it would have been in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The narrow street is lined with traditional wooden houses. Most date from the expansion of Oslo in the period 1810 to 1860. The oldest and most famous is Solberg, built in 1756 by sculptor Ole Meyer, and later inhabited by architect Schirmer and defence minister Nils Christian Irgens.
