Christiansholm Fortress lies at the heart of the southern Norwegian town of Kristiansand. It was built to defend the city, which holds a key position in relation to the stragetically important Skaggerak. The fortress was built in the late seventeenth century by King Frederik III of Denmark and Norway. The walls of the rotunda are five metres thick. The fort was abandoned in the late nineteenth century. It is open to visitors during the high summer season. Guided tours are available.
