The castle rock is a parkland area with a steep slope. It rises more than sixty metres above sea level and dominates the ancient town of Tønsberg. On the rock are the ruins of Castrum Tunsbengis, once Norway’s largest castle, built in the thirteenth century. It was built by King Haakon Haakonsson. His daughter, Princess Kristina, left from here to marry a Spanish prince in 1257. A statue of depicting her lies at the southern entrance to the rock.
