Bølareinen ("The Bøla reindeer") is an extraordinary naturalistic depiction of a reindeer located about thirty kilometres east of Steinkjer, just off the 763 highway. It was carved in stone using a flint about six thousand years ago. It is one of the best known and most impressive Stone Age carvings in Europe. It is believed that the carving had ritual significance connected with success in hunting. Figures of a bear, a moose and a man, of a similar age have also been discovered in the area. Remarkably, the man is shown with skis. There is a parking place, cafe and shop here.
