The Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson Statue lies in the heart of Bergen, near the theatre. It is in bronze and was unveiled in 1917. The piece is by one of Norway’s most celebrated sculptors, Gustav Vigelund. Bjørnson lived between 1832 and 1910 and is regarded as one of Norway’s finest writers, in a country with an extraordinarily rich and proud literary tradition given its small population and obscure language. In 1903 Bjørnson was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.
