Bjerkebæk lies in the heart of Lillehammer and is the former home of one of Norway’s most popular authors, Sigrid Undset. The home was constructed by the author after she moved to Lillehammer in 1919 and involved combining two old timber buildings around which she built a beautiful garden. Sigrid Undset is best know for her novels set in the medieval period. It was largely as a consequence of these that she was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1928. She was also known as a vocal opponent of Nazism and left the country during the occupation period. Her home and garden are now a popular visitor attraction.
