The Birkenes region lies inland from Lillesand and Grimstad. It is an area with many natural attractions. The rich wildlife includes deer, elks and beavers, who dwell in the rich wooded areas. There are many good spots for fishing. Walking opportunities include a ten kilometres disused railway line from Birkenes from Lillesand, and the mountain of Mosfjell. There are good bathing spots in the area.
