The Aust-Agder Museum is found in the heart of the southern coastal town of Arendal. It deals with the history of the town and of the region. The museum contains important collections of geological and mineral specimens. There are also displays illustrating the cultural and commercial development of the area between 1600 and 1900. There is a great deal of information about maritime history, including a major exhibition on the slave ship Fredensborg, wrecked nearby in the seventeenth century.
