Aulestad lies to the northwest of Lillehammer, in a mountainous rural area. It is the former home of the author, poet and Nobel Laureate Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson who lived between 1832 and 1910. Bjørnson wrote several works of fiction that depicted the ordinary lives of working people in Norway, as well as writing the words of the Norwegian national anthem. Bjørnson lived in this house from 1875 onwards with his wife Karoline, who donated the home to the state upon her death in 1934. Visitors can see the authentic surroundings in which the pair worked and lived.
